Wendy Carlos

£225.00

Wendy Carlos (born 1939) is an American composer and musician known for her film scores and experimental albums. Born Walter Carlos, she transitioned in the early 1970s and has the distinction of being the first transgender artist ever to receive a Grammy Award. A pioneer of electronic music, she assisted in the development of the Moog synthesizer while at Columbia University in the 1960s, and enjoyed her first commercial success in 1968 with Switched-On Bach, an album of baroque music performed on the Moog. The album was a top ten hit, winning three Grammys, spawning a sequel entitled The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, and attracting the attention of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, who enlisted Carlos to provide the score for A Clockwork Orange (1971). Showcasing electronic renditions of music by Beethoven, Purcell, Rossini and Carlos herself, the score for A Clockwork Orange became a touchstone of 1970s popular culture - a year later David Bowie began to use it as the opening music for his legendary Ziggy Stardust concerts. Wendy Carlos went on to score another Kubrick classic, The Shining (1980), as well as Disney’s groundbreaking computer-animated picture Tron (1982). Her subsequent albums include Digital Moonscapes (1984), Beauty in the Beast (1986), and Tales of Heaven and Hell (1998).
