Cheryl Dunye (born 1966) is a Liberian-American filmmaker, writer and actor, whose career began with Janine (1990), the first in a series of short films addressing themes of race, sexuality and gender. Her feature-length debut The Watermelon Woman (1996) is a groundbreaking exploration of the history of Black women and lesbians in film, and is also believed to be the first feature to be directed by an out Black lesbian.
