David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto

£425.00

David Bowie (1947-2016) was a British musician, actor and artist whose remarkable career changed the face of postwar popular culture. Launching his celebrated alter ego Ziggy Stardust in 1972, Bowie famously proclaimed himself bisexual, and many of his best-known songs and film roles explore queer sensibilities. In Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1983), he stars opposite another avant-garde musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023), who plays Captain Yonoi, the brutal commandant of a Japanese POW camp in which Bowie’s character, Jack Celliers, is interned. Yonoi is tortured by his attraction to Celliers, who in the film’s climactic moment saves a fellow prisoner’s life by stepping forward and kissing the commandant in a reckless act of redemptive self-sacrifice.

Other films include: The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Just a Gigolo (1979), Labyrinth (1986), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Basquiat (1996)
